A young woman crouches on a chessboard. Her gaze disappears into nothingness, while her heavy boots seem to anchor her to the ground. Around her, chess pieces fly away. The ordered playing field loses its rules; strategies dissolve, and control begins to slip away.
Forgotten Games reflects on a society caught between disorientation and responsibility. The chessboard becomes a symbol of political systems, power structures, and democratic processes — a game whose rules only function as long as they are recognized and protected by all participants. The scattered chess pieces point to the loss of shared values, to polarization, manipulation, and the gradual forgetting of democratic achievements.
The young woman appears both as observer and participant. Her posture shifts between exhaustion, contemplation, and silent vigilance. She represents a generation living through social upheaval and searching for orientation amid ongoing crises. The work raises the question of what remains when democratic rules fall out of balance — and what responsibility each individual carries within that system.
Within the context of the exhibition Zeitzeichen Demokratie, Forgotten Games can be understood as a visual metaphor for the fragility of democratic structures. Democracy is not a fixed condition, but an ongoing process that requires attention, remembrance, and active participation.
